From Floppies to Flash--Your Guide to Removable Media
Berdinka, Matthew J.
Tech Directions, v65 n4 p20-23 Nov 2005
Technology that once involved a scary, mysterious machine the size of a small house now fits on desktops and commonly appears in offices, schools, and homes. Computers allow for processing, storing and transmitting data between two or more people virtually anywhere in the world. They also allow users to save documents, presentations, photos and videos on a wide variety of removable formats. These formats, also called "removable media," allow users to transport copies of a file for use on any other computer that has the necessary devices. A wide variety of removable media exists today, and each has its own unique characteristics, advantages and possible disadvantages. Physical size, storage size, compatibility, performance and price determine which removable media best suit a particular circumstance or use. This article discusses the attributes of several key types of removable media readily available today. (Contains 2 tables and 1 figure.)
