A Course of Study for Social Studies in Utah. High School Electives.
Talbot, Walter D.
This guide outlines the content and instructional objectives of high school social studies elective courses and contains administrative guidelines for teachers, supervisors, and administrators. Educators in Utah believe that people are social beings who need wholesome human relationships and productive problem-solving skills. Social studies helps to fulfill these needs and is the major area in the school's general education program which is concerned with the preparation of students in becoming responsible, rational, participating citizens in a pluralistic, democratic society and in a world which is becoming increasingly interdependent. Content and instructional objectives are provided for the following courses: European history, advanced placement; U.S. history, advanced placement; anthropology; economics/free enterprise; law-related education; model United Nations; psychology; sociology; U.S. government; U.S. problems; and world cultures. The second part of the guide contains administrative guidelines. Included among these are standards for the social studies curriculum, suggestions for using the guidelines for social studies needs assessment, a self-evaluation instrument, and standards for staff. The guide also contains a scope and sequence chart for K-12 social studies in Utah. (Author/RM)
