Success in Spelling: A Course of Study in Spelling for Grades 1-6.
Rochester Public Schools, Minn.
The spelling program described in this guide, piloted and evaluated by 40 teachers of the Rochester, Minnesota elementary school district, is based upon current research, sound linguistic principles, and studies that determine which words are most frequently used by children and adults in their written communication. The guide provides an overview of the spelling program, procedures for organizing the weekly spelling activities, and other components of the program. Guidelines for evaluating and reporting student progress, a scope and sequence chart for the spelling curriculum, and spelling lists for grades one through six are also included. Appendixes contain spelling progress charts for grades two to six, the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary, 100 spelling demons, homonyms, the Pollock Word List, prefixes, Greek roots, Latin roots, suffixes, and some successfully implemented spelling activities and games.
