DESIGNED AS A RESOURCE FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS TO USE IN HELPING CHILDREN THINK CLEARLY AND COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY, THE ST. PAUL CURRICULUM GUIDE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS--SPEAKING, LISTENING, AND WRITING. AN OVERVIEW OF EACH SECTION DESCRIBES CURRENT THINKING IN THE FIELD AND GENERAL SKILLS WHICH NEED TO BE ACQUIRED BY STUDENTS. SPECIFIC SEQUENTIAL ACTIVITIES FOR THE INDUCTIVE TEACHING OF EACH SKILL ARE PRESENTED FOR GRADES K-6, AND LESSON PLANS ARE ORGANIZED TO ASSIST CHILDREN AND TEACHERS IN PLANNING, CARRYING OUT, AND EVALUATING ACTIVITIES. TEACHING PROCEDURES, IDEAS FOR ENRICHMENT, AND SAMPLES OF CHILDREN'S ACTUAL WORK ARE ALSO INCLUDED. THE SECTION ON SPEAKING EMPHASIZES SUCH ACTIVITIES AS STORYTELLING, DRAMATIZING, CREATING CONVERSATIONS AND DISCUSSIONS, TELEPHONING, AND CONDUCTING MEETINGS. ACTIVITIES SUGGESTED TO DEVELOP THE LISTENING SKILL ARE FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS, SOLVING MENTAL PROBLEMS, AND LISTENING TO POETRY, STORIES, MUSIC, OR REPORTS. THE SECTION ON WRITTEN COMMUNICATION INCLUDES SUCH ACTIVITIES AS LETTERWRITING, KEEPING RECORDS, WRITING REPORTS, STUDYING SENTENCE STRUCTURE, AND WRITING CREATIVELY. A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SUPPLEMENTARY REFERENCES IS ALSO INCLUDED.
