Better Science: Making It Relevant to Young People. Curriculum Guide 3.
Stewart, Denis, Comp.
This is the third in a series of 12 curriculum guides. These publications are recommendations which the committee made for a broad and balanced education program in science for young people. The main theme of this guide is that science education which young people experience during their period of compulsory schooling needs to be characterized by relevancy and applicability. The primary focus is on consumers and their perceptions of the "goods." Section one explains the meaning of school science relevancy, school science applicability, and reasons for promoting certain brands of relevance and applicability. The next three sections consider ways and means of making school science relevant to students. These are exemplified by a selection of material from Secondary Science Curriculum Review (SSCR) working groups. Section five deals with the nature of technology, its place in the school curriculum, and its relationship to science in the curriculum. Section six presents an essay entitled "Biotechnology in the School Curriculum" (David Ingleby). A summary of recommendations are listed in section seven. References are included. (RT)
