The population of the Republic of the Philippines is largely composed of common racial stock except for a small minority of ethnic Chinese. Ethnic differences are largely on the basis of language and religion. Over 90 percent of the people are Christians, mostly Roman Catholics, approximately 5 percent are Muslims, and the remainder adhere to the indigenous beliefs of the islands. The Chinese resist integration, maintain their own schools, and have been only marginally assimilated. Communists in the Phillipines, largely scholars or domestic Chinese, are constantly working toward an overthrow of the government. The Muslims are waging a guerrilla war with the objective of seceding from the Republic of the Phillipines. Under these circumstances, the chances for education to successfully serve as an instrument of integration are rather slim. (Author/JM)
