Gutschow, Harald – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978
Various ways of incorporating area studies into the curriculum are examined. The three approaches mentioned in the title are found impractical. The best approach for the foreign language teacher is to put the language first, and bring in area study items where appropriate. (WGA)

Putnam, Constance E. – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978
Suggests guidelines for the teaching of culture and presents a possible classroom vehicle. It is emphasized that while refinements of civilization should not be ignored, culture as perceived by the man on the street should be of central concern, particularly in early states of language study. (EJS)

Gutschow, Harald – Unterrichtspraxis, 1977
Currently some skepticism exists concerning the value of area studies--especially the concept of "national traits." Also, the alleged motivational value may be offset by the sacrifice of language-learning time. German language teaching has followed the U.S. lead; American teachers might profit from German experience. (Text is in German.) (WGA)
Descriptors: Area Studies, Cultural Education, Cultural Traits, German

Schmidt, Hugo – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978
Describes a one-semester course whose purpose was not to include as many items as possible, but to try to treat adequately a few carefully chosen "theme areas", e.g., The Middle Ages, from Cloister Culture to the Decline of Chivalry, and The Growth of Urban Culture. (WGA)
Descriptors: Area Studies, Course Descriptions, Cultural Background, Cultural Context

Liedloff, Helmut – Unterrichtspraxis, 1975
Discusses the necessity of incorporating cultural themes in the German curriculum of American colleges from the beginning level on. These themes should be contemporary, should help the student contrast the foreign culture with his own and help him see language as a system of symbols. (Text is in German.) (TL)

Peacock, Dennis E. – Unterrichtspraxis, 1978
