Being minorities, or "the other" in institutions and in institutional life is discussed. "Otherness," which means feeling excluded, or even disdained and scorned, produces a sense of isolation or alienation. Higher education needs to reflect the diversity of society and lead the struggle against exclusion and alienation. (MLW)
