Parental Attitudes towards Aremenian Dual Language Immersion Programs (DLIPS)
Nicole Bitvarda
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Bakersfield
This dissertation explores the potential differences in Armenian parental attitudes of those whose children were enrolled in a Dual Language Immersion Program (DLIP) and those whose children who were not enrolled in a DLIP towards four constructs of school perceptions: cultural appreciation (CA), academic progress (AP), importance of learning a second language (ILSL), and parent volunteerism (PV) in Los Angeles County, California. In order to investigate the potential differences between the two groups within each construct, an adapted Likert scale survey will be used from Saucedo (1997). With the theoretical frameworks of Cummins (1980), Krashen (1996), Hakuta (1996), and Lado (1957), the design of the quantitative study is pre-experimental in order to study the mean differences between the two groups within the four constructs. The study compares mean Likert scale scores between Armenian parents of children who were enrolled in DLIPs and those who were not for each of the four constructs. Because the study is a pre-experimental design, there are no pre- and post-tests (Creswell, 2014); furthermore, it should be noted that the compared groups are nonequivalent. The two groups being compared did not receive the same treatment, because one group of respondents had children who were enrolled in a DLIP, and the other group of respondents had children who were not enrolled in a DLIP. An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) procedure is used to answer all four of the research questions. The present study contributes to the research by examining the potential differences of Armenian parental attitudes towards DLIPs. The participant pool consists of 70 returned participant surveys that meet the criteria and are complete, where 34 of the participants are Armenian parents whose children were enrolled in a DLIP, and 36 of the returned survey responses are from Armenian parents whose children were not enrolled in a DLIP. The research questions yield statistically significant results from the ANCOVA for the difference between Armenian parent perceptions of CA, AP, ILSL, and PV for those whose children were enrolled in a DLIP and those whose children were not enrolled in a DLIP. However, the propensity score does not have a statistically significant relationship with Armenian parent perceptions of CAP, AP, ILSL, and PV).
