School Safety and Disciplinary Strategies Views and Opinions of Principals and Teachers

School safety and security strategies is a generic qualitative study that seeks to comprehend school safety and disciplinary strategies through the perspectives and opinions of teachers and principals. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the strategies used in secondary inner-city schools to regulate student discipline behavior. The problem is that some principals and teachers do not have high-yielding strategies for reducing disciplinary conduct. The research question for this study is: "What are the perceptions of principals and school teachers regarding school safety and disciplinary strategies implemented in inner-city schools?" This study's methodology is a generic qualitative investigation. A qualitative study of this type includes the participants' voices and results in a detailed description and interpretation of the research problem. A generic qualitative investigation employs qualitative methodology, in-depth interviewing, and documented analysis to answer a simple topic. Ten participants, three principals, and seven teachers, gave their perspectives on school safety and disciplinary techniques. Thematic data analysis with consistent comparison was used. Thematic analysis is a method for extracting major themes from applicable verbal data. The themes were then coded to show clear results of the findings. Persistent negative behavior, insufficient strategies, and effective solutions were the three themes developed from the data collection. Educators describe verbal and physical confrontations with students and adults, including cursing and disregarding authority figures, youth participating in gang activities, bullying, theft, and drug use. Using time-outs, in-school, out-of-school suspensions, and expulsion was viewed as insufficient strategies due to these punitive discipline strategies not addressing the root cause of the behavior. Effective solutions regarding the strategies used for discipline were the third theme. Restorative techniques and extended student support services were emphasized by educators as useful strategies. Restorative techniques or practices are ways that allow students to be held accountable for their negative conduct. Effective solutions also involve more student support resources such as psychologists and social workers. It is recommended that more qualitative research be conducted to investigate the experiences of the student support staff to reveal the true issues regarding the student and their misbehavior. Some students are positive and willing to comply with the school's rules and participate in their education. Further research investigating the impact and effect of violence in schools on those students regarding their academic performance would contribute to the literature.
