Exploring Fear of Crime on College Campuses and Students Perception of Campus Security and Safety
Lynn Granger
ProQuest LLC, D.C.J. Dissertation, Capella University
In light of the recent violent crimes and murders in and around educational institutions in the past year here in the United States, fear of crime is of great concern, Analyzing student's fear of crime levels and their perceptions' of the people and entities whom are in place to protect them from victimization is always up for discussion, This dissertation explored the interactions between the variables of fear of crime, perceptions of campus security and victimization. In addition to analyzing whether the variables are still associated, after controlling for race, student's grade level, sex, and international vs. citizens. A quantitative online survey was used to gather 75 participants, currently in college, and over the age of 18 living on or off campus. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis testing was conducted through JASP, an online statistical software program. Statistical analysis results from this testing showed very little statistical significance between the variables listed above, although they are closely related. This analysis is solely based on the total population size used in this study. Testing results revealed that student's fear of crime levels was not affected by their perceptions of campus security or safety. Results from this study also revealed that although there was a relationship between victimization and several of the listed fear of crime measures, the relationships were "extremely weak." Survey questionnaire results also indicated that students' lifestyles and routines expose them to higher risks of becoming victimized on and off campus. However, no specific group of the variables tested experienced higher rates of victimization than others. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
