International Journal for the Advancement of Counselling, v44 n1 p112-125 Mar 2022
Traditionally, counselor education instruction has taken place in the face-to-face format. However, with the shift toward online learning, more counselor education programs are incorporating distance education into the curriculum. Counselor educators continue to study the impact of distance education methods on student learning, but studies are inconclusive especially in how trainees acquire skills in distance formats. This study is an examination of skills acquisition and comparison of students enrolled in introductory counseling skills courses. The courses were delivered online with brief face-to-face meetings in two different formats: 4 consecutive days or 2 separate weekends. Results indicated no significant differences in student counseling skill acquisition between the two hybrid formats. Students in both courses demonstrated skills at basic mastery levels at the end of the course.
