Teaching Ecotherapy within Counselor Education Programs: A Q-Methodology Analysis
Katie K. Sacco
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Idaho State University
Ecotherapy is defined as the human-nature connection as addressed within a counseling session (Delaney, 2020). Ecotherapy practice has been gaining in popularity in the field of counseling. With the increase in popularity, there is a documented demand for an increase in ecotherapy training (Jordan & Hinds, 2016; King & McIntyre, 2018). Without an increase in ecotherapy training availability, counselors face unclear legal and ethical implications (Hasbach, 2016). Currently, there is a lack of literature outlining how to best approach ecotherapy education (Delaney, 2020). Counselor Educators can fill this gap by providing a more unified approach to ecotherapy education. My research study utilized Q-Methodology to explore expert opinions of ecotherapy instruction. Results were informed by a 35 statement Q-sort, participant demographic information, and open ended questionnaires. I determined two factor groupings from the information gathered: participants who valued ecotherapy intervention skills and participants who valued the development of student knowledge and understanding of ecotherapy concepts. Results from this study help establish further need for a unified approach to ecotherapy education. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
