Comparing Student Burnout in Online versus In-Person Master's Counseling Programs

The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in burnout between master's students in online versus in-person counseling programs in the United States. The theoretical foundation for this study was Maslach's Three-Factor Model of Burnout. The research questions asked if there are statistically significant differences in the three dimensions of burnout (exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy) between online versus in-person master's students in counseling programs in the United States. The Maslach Burnout Inventory -- General Survey (Student) was used to measure the dimensions of burnout in a convenience sample of 165 master's students. Two independent-samples t-tests showed no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of exhaustion: t(163) = -1.137, p = 0.257 and in terms of professional efficacy: t(163) = -0.95, p = 0.925. A nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test showed that the mean cynicism subscale scores were statistically significantly different between the students who attended online (M = 2.463) and those who attended in-person (M = 2.017): U = 3803, z = 2.214, p = 0.027. The results may inform the development of interventions aimed at preventing burnout among online students in master's counseling programs, whose cynicism was found in this study to be significantly higher in comparison with that of students who attended in person.
