Transition Planning Team Membership for Adolescents with Intellectual Disabilities: A Qualitative Descriptive Study
Kristyn D. Corace
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to seek descriptions from people included in, and excluded from, participating on transition teams for adolescents with intellectual disabilities entering adulthood in New Jersey. The theoretical framework included two theories to support this research. Faludi's Procedural Planning Theory defines the tools used among members of the planning team for a sequential completion of tasks. Schlossberg's Transition Theory states that transition is any event that changes relationships, patterns, or regimens. The research questions used in this study were: 1. How do people describe being included in participating on transition teams for adolescents with intellectual disabilities entering adulthood? And 2. How do people describe being excluded from participating on transition teams for adolescents with intellectual disabilities entering adulthood? The sample for this study was 24 included and excluded transition planning team members in New Jersey. The methodology was qualitative, using a qualitative descriptive design. The data analysis procedure used was the six-step thematic analysis method of Braun and Clarke. Study findings include transition planning was an important and essential process, dissemination of information did not occur effectively, students with intellectual disabilities and their families were not supported in the transition planning process, families obtained transition information from other sources beyond school personnel, and excluded members should have been included in the process. The findings of this study may provide guidance for informing practitioners of best practices in the areas of transition planning while contributing to the literature on the topic.
