Peer-to-Peer Roundtables: Sharing Is Caring
Fishman, Seth Matthew
Assessment Update, v35 n3 p12-13 May-Jun 2023
At Villanova University, with approximately 11,000 students enrolled across six colleges and a law school, generating ways to engage faculty in assessment professional development can be challenging, particularly for an institution with a decentralized assessment system. During faculty interactions, it is often heard that faculty dislike attending assessment "lectures" but are more open to participating in roundtable discussions. Peer-to-peer sharing is an effective way to engage faculty; therefore, the university created a "Faculty Forum" to determine if a roundtable event would be an effective platform to generate campus-wide faculty development. Over 50 faculty registered at the inaugural Forum, representing all the colleges. Since 2015, a Faculty Forum has been held annually, with 30--50 faculty attending. The evaluation feedback has suggested faculty are implementing ideas gleaned from the Forum and promoting it among their colleagues.
