Thomas, Roger K.; Peay, Lynn – Developmental Psychology, 1976
Purpose of study was to investigate the applicability of Piaget's theory and methods to the study of conservation in nonhumans. Two out of four subject monkeys achieved stringent and statistically significant performance criteria in sameness-difference judgment tests and showed significant generalization in the fewest possible trials. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Animal Behavior, Cognitive Development, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept)

White, Kathleen M.; And Others – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1978
Demonstrates that conservation of amount does not always precede conservation of weight. Subjects were 60 six-year-old children. (BD)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept), Developmental Stages, Elementary School Students

Murray, Frank B. – Journal of Psychology, 1980
Kindergarten and first-grade children conserved physical attributes of inanimate objects more easily than the physical attributes of animate objects. Significant conservation differences between various animate objects also were found. (Author/RL)
Descriptors: Child Development, Children, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept)

Steffe, Leslie P.; Carey, Russell L. – 1972
The goal of this study was to investigate improvement in the usage of equivalence and order relations under specified instructional conditions. Forty-eight upper middle class kindergarten children were given a 14-session pretreatment designed to define two equivalence and four order relations of length and matching, followed by tests of…

Wadsworth, Nancy Denney; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1977
Two experiments investigated the relative efficacy of two conservation training procedures and the transfer of training to another type of conservation. (SB)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept), Preschool Children

Zimmerman, Barry J. – 1977
This paper offers a social learning explanation for age-related changes in children's cognitive functioning. Three hypotheses have been derived from the assumption of Piaget that structures play the preeminent role in cognitive development: (1) a child can not profit from or even appreciate experiences which are meaningful at a higher stage of…

White, Kathleen M.; Friedman, Bruce – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1977
This paper presents a challenge to a widely cited report by Elkind which states that a large proportion of college students, particularly females, are unable to conserve volume. (BD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, College Students, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept)

Miller, Scott A. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1977
In order to study possible effects of the degree of perceptual illusion, 64 kindergarten children received tests of quantitative identity and quantitative equivalence for the conservations of number and continuous quantity. (SB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept), Developmental Stages

Marcus, Dale E.; Overton, Willis F. – Child Development, 1978
Examined the development of stable concepts of "boy" and "girl" in kindergarteners and first and second graders. Gender constance was explored in relation to: performance on conservation tasks; application of gender label to self or other; application of gender label to live person or pictorial representations; and sex role…
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept), Developmental Stages

Gaudia, Gil – Developmental Psychology, 1972
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate conservation acquisition across subcultural groups. (Author)
Descriptors: Analysis of Covariance, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept), Correlation

Curcio, Frank; And Others – Child Development, 1971
A combination of readiness and body-part training was the most effective in producing number conservation with external objects. (Authors)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Concept Formation, Conservation (Concept), Data Analysis
Owens, Douglas T.; Cooney, Thomas J. – 1972
This study examined the effects of a specified set of activities on the ability of educable mentally retarded (EMR) children to use the transitive property and conserve the three relations "same number as,""more than," and "fewer than." Thirteen EMR students, aged 12 to 15, were taught eleven lessons on establishing and conserving these relations,…

Moynahan, Ellen; Glick, Joseph – Developmental Psychology, 1972
Results indicate that identity conservation generally does not precede equivalence conservation; instead the two conservations tend to co-occur. (Authors)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Conceptual Schemes, Conservation (Concept), Data Analysis

Murray, Frank B. – Developmental Psychology, 1972
The expectation that an effective conservation training procedure would be one in which the child was confronted with opposing points of view was investigated in an experiment and a replication experiment in which the child's point of view was brought into conflict with those of other children. (Author/RY)
