Knowledge production and distribution in India are described. Specifically discussed are textbooks, authors, radio and television, and India's ties to the international knowledge network. Even though it is a third world country, India has some independence and autonomy with regard to knowledge production and distribution. (RM)

Radio can be an important part of national strategies to combat illiteracy, a growing problem worldwide. Several strategies are suggested which enable radio to be used as an educational medium in developing nations. Such radio stations should be locally based and controlled by grassroots participation.
