Burisch, Matthias – American Psychologist, 1984
Discusses the external, inductive, and deductive approaches to personality scale construction, and argues that none is consistently superior in terms of validity or predictive effectiveness. Also argues that since deductive scales normally communicate information more directly and are more economical to build and administer, they should be used…

Campbell, Hugh; Ignizio, James P. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1972
Predictions using linear programing are less biased by extreme cases and thus offer a more valid estimate of expected student performance than that given by a least squares approach. (Authors/MB)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Entrance Examinations, Comparative Analysis, Linear Programing

Farley, Frank H. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1972
Study to determine the criterion-related RAM scale relative to a criterion of GPA. (Author/MB)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Comparative Analysis, Grade Point Average, Measurement Techniques

Kaufman, Alan S.; Kaufman, Nadeen L. – Child Development, 1972
Results offer empirical support to Ilg and Ames's claim that the Gesell battery is an excellent predictor of school readiness. The close similarity of the Piaget and Gesell tests accords well with previous findings that the two tests have much in common. (Authors/MB)

Long-Term Predictive and Construct Validity of Two Traditional Predictors of Law School Performance.

Powers, Donald E. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1982
The relative contribution of undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) and the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) to predicting academic performance in each of three years of law school was investigated. The LSAT makes its greatest contribution in early years and UGPA in later years. (Author/BW)
Descriptors: College Entrance Examinations, Comparative Analysis, Correlation, Grade Point Average

Coleman, Marilyn; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1980
The mean IQ on the Slosson Intelligence Test (SIT) was substantially higher than expected based on the earlier Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) scores. Sampling error and examiner error were excluded as explanations. Results suggest that the PPVT and SIT yield different scores and lack comparability. (Author)

Edens, John F.; Skeem, Jennifer L.; Douglas, Kevin S. – Assessment, 2006
This study compares two instruments frequently used to assess risk for violence, the Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG) and the Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version (PCL:SV), in a large sample of civil psychiatric patients. Despite a strong bivariate relationship with community violence, the VRAG could not improve on the predictive validity…

Dial, Thomas H.; Lindley, Diane W. – Journal of Medical Education, 1987
Comparisons of 1983 data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) graduation survey with data on the third-year residencies reveal that the specialty preferences indicated were predictors of residency programs the respondents were in during the third year following graduation. (Author/MLW)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Graduate Medical Students, Graduate Surveys, Higher Education

Martin, John D.; Rudolph, Linda – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1972
The SIT Correlates highly enough with ACT scores to be considered a valid instrument for predicting acceptance and success in college. (Authors)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Criterion Referenced Tests, Grade Point Average, Intelligence Tests

Gottfredson, Stephen D.; Gottfredson, Don M. – Criminal Justice and Behavior, 1980
Compares, within the context of parole decision making, the predictive utility of five statistical methods commonly used to develop correctional risk-screening devices. Results suggest that no apparent empirical advantage accrues to any particular model. Further, most devices developed are highly intercorrelated. (Author)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Criminals, Decision Making, Models

Armstrong, David F.; Nunley, Charlene Wenckowski – Journal of Higher Education, 1981
Two methods used to predict enrollment at Montgomery College in Maryland are compared and evaluated, and the administrative context in which they are used is considered. The two methods involve time series analysis (curve fitting) and indicator techniques (yield from components). (MSE)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Community Colleges, Comparative Analysis, Decision Making

Lenchner, Orna; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1990
Performance by 38 elementary reading-disabled and above-average readers was compared on a series of 6 measures of phonological awareness, including tests of ability to segment, blend, and manipulate phonemes. Results suggest that tasks requiring blending and manipulation of phonemes, in addition to segmentation, may predict decoding ability best.…

Pryor, Colin W.; And Others – Psychology in the Schools, 1989
Students (N=738) from grades one-five who exhibited behavior problems were assessed for behavioral disturbance using the Teacher's Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist. Data were analyzed to assess the form's internal consistency, accuracy in discriminating disturbed and nondisturbed students, and validity in terms of grade repetition and…
