An Assessment of Competence and Commitment to Safety and Adult Learning Training in Post-Secondary Trades and Industry Education
Patrick W. Bower
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trident University International
Safety practices impact production. The teaching of safety practices is impacted by the training of educators, the attitude of superiors, the perception of the importance of safety, and acquired training in adult learning methods. This study examined administrators' and instructors' current proficiency and dedication to safety training and adult learning methods. This was achieved by evaluating the qualifications and utilization of OSH instructors, training and utilization of teaching methods, instructor attitudes and perceptions regarding safety and adult learning training, and the existing safety and health curriculum. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness selected participants, and the group included faculty and administrators in post-secondary construction and general industry trades and craft skills settings at a community college in the United States of America. Descriptive data was used to inform recommendations for teaching OSH in post-secondary construction trades and industry courses. Findings assessed the climate of the institutional sample in efforts to aid the introduction and continuation of safety programs in the construction and general industry trades at the site. The survey identified that instructors have a positive attitude towards safety and adult learning training. Instructors and administrators showed evidence of adult learning training but needed to be more qualified to teach safety. It was also determined that students were below industry-ready standards at graduation from post-secondary programs.
