Comparing the Success of Multilingual Community College Students Based on Placement by Self-Reported Grade-Point Average or Multiple Measures Testing
Key, William, Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southern Connecticut State University
Amongst several recent policy changes, argued in this paper to be neoliberal and constituting structural violence, the Connecticut community college system (CCC) Board of Regents has begun placing students based on self-reported GPA, but studies on the effects of these changes have not included multi-lingual learners (MLL). Using a census of every MLL placed in the CCC in the summer and fall of 2020 and the spring of 2021 (N=12,603), a MANOVA was performed to determine the effects of placement on the MLL students' overall grade-point average (GPA), throughput (time from placement to entry into English 101) and satisfactory academic progress (SAP). Results indicated that MLL students in the CCC system who were placed using multiple measures had a higher overall GPA than students placed using self-reported GPA (M = 3.32, SD = 0.740; M = 2.01, SD = 1.27, respectively), had higher SAP (M = 102.98, SD = 51.52; M = 57.66, SD = 55.53, respectively) but took longer to enroll in English 101 (M = 5.11, SD = 3.55; M = 2.36, SD = 1.76, respectively).
