Community-based colleges have emerged over the last 15 years to serve primarily low-income adults who have been excluded from the mainstream of American social, economic, and political life. A Ford Foundation study concludes that these colleges provide an important option.

An English teacher at Amherst College and Greenfield Community College (Massachusetts) compares characteristics and attitudes of students at the two institutions. It is concluded that, although the students differ in may ways, all are equally deserving of a safe and supportive learning environment and a sound education. (MSE)
