The two studies of predisposition toward verbal behavior (PVB) reported in this paper examined the behavior of interactants who have dissimilar verbal predispositions in task-oriented discussions. In the first study, 20 groups of three members each were given an interpersonal task that involved reaching a consensus. In the second study, 17 pairs made up of a high- and a low-PVB subject were involved in an interpersonal discussion. Results from both studies indicate that differences in the behavior of PVB subjects hold true in interpersonal settings; dissimilar PVB subjects perceive their own and others' predispositions toward verbal behavior accurately; low-PVB subjects were liked as much as high-PVB subjects, perhaps because there was not enough time for networks of interpersonal attraction to develop; and subjects' predispositions toward their verbal behavior have a rich set of behavioral and cognitive consequences in task-oriented interactions.
