What Works Clearinghouse Rating

Crocker, Linda; Benson, Jeri – American Educational Research Journal, 1976
Multivariate and univariate analysis of variance indicated that students tested under a norm referenced condition earned higher achievement scores than those tested under criterion referenced conditions. A significant relationship was observed between risk-taking and achievement only under a criterion referenced condition. (Author/RC)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Students, Criterion Referenced Tests, Guessing (Tests)

Blaney, Paul H.; Cox, Charles L. – Journal of Personality Assessment, 1975
This study assesses the viability of the rating approach compared to the forced choice approach by use of the Activity Preference Questionnaire. (DEP)
Descriptors: Anxiety, College Students, Forced Choice Technique, Higher Education

Schenkel, Susi – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1975
Investigates the relationship among ego identity status, field-independence, and traditional femininity among senior college women. (Author/DEP)
Descriptors: Attitude Measures, College Students, Females, Femininity

Meehan, Kenneth A.; And Others – Journal of Research in Personality, 1979
Three studies investigating the psychometric and conceptual properties of the self-report Survey of Ethical Attitudes inventory indicated that the scale is clearly susceptible to response dissimulation through role playing and impression management and is also confounded with sources of stylistic variance in the form of social desirability.…

Leong, Frederick T. L.; Zachar, Peter – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1991
Presents three studies on development of Scientist-Practitioner Inventory (SPI) designed to measure career specialty interests of psychology students. Reports factorial validity of scales, test-retest reliability, freedom from response-set biases, and construct validity; cross-validation evidence of second-order factor structure, internal…

Riedel, Sharon; And Others – 1982
Self-report, pre/post testing is a frequently employed measure of therapeutic change. To investigate whether expectation of change might be an alternative explanation to the scale shift explanation of response shift bias in a self-report measure, a two-session assertiveness training intervention for college women was evaluated under manipulated…

Lowry, Stephen R. – 1977
The effects of luck and misinformation on ability of multiple-choice test scores to estimate examinee ability were investigated. Two measures of examinee ability were defined. Misinformation was shown to have little effect on ability of raw scores and a substantial effect on ability of corrected-for-guessing scores to estimate examinee ability.…

Hall, Bruce W.; And Others – 1973
Research examined the hypothesis that predictive validity would be greater for a test given under stress instructions than for a test given under relax instructions. Ss were 254 education students in a graduate measurement course and 117 education students in an undergraduate measurement course. Ss were randomly assigned to the instructional…

Vargo, James W.; Semple, John E. – Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, 1984
Examined whether the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons test could be faked by 38 physical therapy students who took the test once honestly and once faking positive attitudes. Results showed fake scores were significantly higher than honest scores, indicating that respondents were able to fake positive responses. (JAC)
Descriptors: Attitudes toward Disabilities, College Students, Counselor Training, Disabilities
Condon, Vaneta M. – 1986
An exam analysis procedure was developed at Loma Linda University School of Nursing to help students who do poorly on tests identify problem areas. Using the student's exam paper, the student and instructor discuss each incorrectly answered question, and record the problem on a check sheet. The procedure makes it possible to identify how many…

Spencer, Boyd; And Others – 1983
Research on trait descriptions of interpersonal behavior tends to converge on a two-dimensional representation in which descriptive variables are arrayed in a circular fashion around the major axes of affiliation and dominance. Wiggins' self-report adjective checklist (1979) reflects this theoretical ordering. To explore the utility of Wiggins'…

Tracy, D. B.; And Others
Responses on both the state and trait scales of the State-Trait Anxiety (STAI) Inventory were examined under two conditions. The first condition presented a simulated real-life situation containing competitive and evaluative cues without directly suggesting faking and asked subjects to complete the STAI. After an intervening task, the STAI was…

Littrell, Roland – 1971
It was hypothesized that, with stimulus words selected for familiarity and associative hierarchy, extreme responders give faster and more common or popular free associations than nonextreme responders. Results did not support this hypothesis. Predicted effects of stimulus word attributes were observed. (Author)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Association Measures, Association (Psychology), College Students
Tobias, Sigmund; Hedl, John J., Jr. – 1972
This paper reports two experiments whose purpose was to relate two bodies of research on anxiety: test and trait-state anxiety. It was reasoned that state anxiety measures obtained in an evaluation testing condition should be more similar to test anxiety than state anxiety measures obtained in non-evaluative situations, such as a game in Study I…

Johnson, Phillip L.; And Others – Mid-Western Educational Researcher, 1991
Among 148 college students taking a self-adapted computerized test of basic algebra skills, higher self-confidence and lower test anxiety were related to choosing more difficult first items but were not related to later choices. Overall, examinees chose items of moderate difficulty relative to their ability level. (SV)
