Carver, Ronald P. – Reading Research Quarterly, 1985
Investigates the reading rate and comprehension of a total of 16 individuals who represented four superior reading groups: speed readers, professionals, college students, and people who scored exceptionally high on tests. (HOD)

Birkmire, Deborah P. – Reading Research Quarterly, 1985
Describes an experiment that explored the relationships between text structure, prior knowledge, and reader's purpose on the processing of text and memory for text information. Results demonstrated that the strategies used to read text are flexible. (HOD)

McConkie, George W.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1973
Groups of college undergraduates read a series of passages with each group consistently receiving a certain type of question after each passage. Reading strategies adopted by the different groups were analyzed. (Editor)

Everson, Michael E. – Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, 1988
First-year students of Chinese at the United States Air Force Academy (n=60) were tested for reading speed and comprehension of Chinese passages presented either in characters or romanization. Students read faster and understood more in romanization than in characters. (LMO)

Shimoda, Todd A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1993
The impact of interestingness and "narrativity" on comprehension, attention, and reading speed and the role of topic familiarity were studied for 16 college students in psychology classes and 8 from engineering classes who read excerpts from psychology and engineering texts. Results support schema-based comprehension theory. (SLD)

Gordon, Peter C.; Hendrick, Randall; Ledoux, Kerry; Yang, Chin Lung – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1999
Five experiments used self-paced reading time to examine the ways in which complex noun phrases influence the interpretation of referentially dependent expressions. Results indicate that the entity introduced by a major constituent of a sentence is more accessible as a referent than the entities introduced by component noun phrases. (Author/VWL)

Shaughnessy, Michael F.; Evans, Robert – 1985
While the prediction of college grade point average (GPA) has been extensively investigated, research results seem inconclusive. Recent developments in the realm of intelligence have emphasized word knowledge and world knowledge. These two components were investigated relative to college GPA in a group of elementary and secondary student teachers…

Maxwell, Martha J. – 1969
This pilot study investigated (1) the extent scanning speed can be improved through practice, (2) the learning strategies students use in attempting to improve their scanning, and (3) differences between scanning rate for stimuli presented orally and visually. Subjects were advanced college students with average reading skills. Each subject was…

Samuels, S. Jay; Chen, C. C.
A word recognition model involving four processing stages was used, and tests of various word recognition strategies were administered to 25 fourth graders and 25 college students. The model included the following stages: (1) using information in a passage; (2) generating hypotheses from what the next word might be; (3) testing these hypotheses…

Herman, James Edward – 1972
The purpose of this study was to determine what effects an intensive six-week college reading improvement program would have on students' reading rates, reading comprehension, and cumulative quality point ratio (CQPR) over a fourteen-month period of time. The population consisted of 40 matched pairs of undergraduate students at the University of…

Jandreau, Steven M.; And Others – British Journal of Educational Technology, 1986
Describes two experiments which demonstrate improvement in reading speed as a result of an uncomplicated BASIC computer program which automatically assigns phrase structure to grammatical sentences to produce syntactically formatted text. Both experiments indicate poor readers are aided by this type of format. (MBR)

Pomplun, Mark; Frey, Sharon; Becker, Douglas; Hughes, Kay – 2000
This paper describes the investigation of a computerized measure of reading rate as measured by the new Nelson-Denny Reading Test CD-ROM (1993). This study addressed three aspects of validity: (1) score comparability between reading rate measured by the computer version and the paper-and-pencil version; (2) concurrent validity with reading…

King, Paul T.; and others – J Reading, 1969
Describes a study of 115 college students enrolled in a reading improvement program and an equal number of control students. Significant gains in mean grade point average in reading rate, and in reading efficiency are reported for those students who entered the program reading between 200-250 words per minute. Bibliography. (MD)
