Sime, Wesley E.; And Others – Journal of College Student Personnel, 1987
Administered the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale to Introductory Statistics college students. A high mathematics anxiety was associated with lower performance on a statistics examination. Classroom stress-coping intervention reduced anxiety and physiological stress responses, but did not improve academic performance. (Author/KS)

Roberts, Dennis M.; Bilderback, Edward W. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1980
A 34-item scale entitled Statistics Attitude Survey (SAS) was developed and administered to three samples of students taking a beginning statistics course. Analyses showed that the scale was highly homogeneous and that total scale scores had moderate correlations with statistics grades. (Author)

Benson, Jeri – Journal of Experimental Education, 1989
The basis of test anxiety expressed by 219 university students (43 percent males) in a statistics course was explored, and a structural model was developed. The data indicated that anxiety felt for the statistics test differed from general test anxiety. The variables revealed as important by the model are discussed. (SLD)

Cooper, Stewart E.; Robinson, Debra A. G. – Journal of College Student Development, 1989
Investigated mathematics anxiety effects in engineering and technical college students (N=381). Found lack of any significant gender differences in regard to mathematical ability, anxiety, and performance. Recommends further research in differences in mathematics experience, self-efficacy beliefs, or interpersonal processes. (ABL)

Trent, Richard M. – 1985
The present demand for quantitative proficiency makes low mathematics achievement not only a formidable obstacle in occupational aspirations but also in the academic arena. To modify the current understanding of the problem of mathematics anxiety and to develop an effective treatment program, college students (12 subjects per group; 8 females, 4…

Singer, Joan M.; Stake, Jayne E. – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1986
Examined the relationship of math participation and success to self-esteem and career goals. No gender differences were found in math anxiety or perceptions of the usefulness of mathematics, but women selected math-related careers less frequently. Math participation and self-assessments of math ability related positively to self-estimates of…

Hackett, Gail; Betz, Nancy E. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
This study investigated the relationship between mathematical performance and mathematics self-efficacy, attitudes toward mathematics, and the choice of mathematics-related majors by college women and men. Performance and self-efficacy correlate positively with attitudes, masculine sex-role orientation, and a mathematics-related major. (Author/DC)

Overcoming Math Anxiety: A Comparison of Stress Inoculation Training and Systematic Desensitization.

Schneider, Walter J.; Nevid, Jeffrey S. – Journal of College Student Development, 1993
Stress inoculation training and systematic desensitization treatment provided to 45 college students resulted in significantly lower mathematics anxiety ratings and less subjective distress reported prior to a mathematics aptitude test, with no significant changes found in a delayed treatment control. No treatment group differences were found for…

Powers, Stephen; And Others – 1984
The attribution patterns of 132 Japanese-American and 63 Anglo-American students at the University of Hawaii were studied in 1984. Students were administered the Mathematics Attribution Scale as well as measures of achievement motivation, anxiety, and self-esteem. Japanese-American students were found to have lower achievement motivation and…

Furinghetti, Fulvia; Morselli, Francesca – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
In this paper we report on a case study of a university student (third year of Mathematics course). She was engaged in proving a statement of elementary number theory. We asked her to write the thoughts that accompanied her solving process. She was collaborative and her protocol is suitable to study the interrelation between affect and cognition.…

Norwood, Karen S. – School Science and Mathematics, 1994
Analysis of covariance of pre- and posttest scores on mathematics anxiety and arithmetic achievement tests of (n=123) college students taught arithmetic using two different instructional approaches (rule oriented versus concept oriented) found a significant difference between the posttest anxiety scores of the two groups. (22 references)…

Lupkowski, Ann E.; Schumacker, Randall E. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1991
Forty-four male and 22 female students attending an early entrance to college program for talented students completed the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale. Results indicate that these talented students are less mathematically anxious than typical college students. Females are more mathematically anxious than males, although the finding is not…

Perry, Andrew B. – College Student Journal, 2004
This paper examines the phenomenon of mathematics anxiety in contemporary college and university students. Forms of math anxiety range from moderate test anxiety to extreme anxiety including physiological symptoms such as nausea. For each of several types of math anxiety, one or more case studies is analyzed. Selected strategies for coping with…

Bieschke, Kathleen J.; Lopez, Frederick G. – 1991
Although women are entering male-dominated occupations at a greater rate, they still tend to avoid those occupations, as well as college majors that require math. Lack of an adequate math background, and thus lower math achievement, seems to effectively bar women from high level, technological, and male-dominated occupations. This study examined…

Auzmendi, Elena – 1991
A multifactorial scale of attitudes toward statistics was developed, and factors related to attitudes toward statistics (objective and subjective mathematics background, anxiety, spatial ability, expectations, motivation, attitudes toward computers, teacher and course evaluation, sex and sex-role stereotypes, and major) were investigated for…
