Peer Mentor Program Initiative Pilot Year Discoveries: Two Approaches for Engaging Students through Peer Mentoring
Heath, Jenna; Dagri, Erika
About Campus, v27 n5 p19-25 Nov-Dec 2022
Peer mentoring programs have repeatedly shown that peer-to-peer support is a vital part of the transition process for new college students. Sometimes, what a student needs most in those imperative years is someone who can identify with them and provide the advice needed to get them to the finish line. In August 2019, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) College of Liberal Arts (COLA) launched a Peer Mentor Program Initiative to impact graduation rates, increase student retention and success, and advance learning experiences. In this article, the authors discuss the two program models developed throughout the 2019-20 academic year: (1) embedding the program into the curriculum and (2) an incentivized, opt-in model. The authors also summarize both model's methods and results, discuss the program's successes and limitations, as well as future directions, and ease of replication at other institutions.
