Thaddeus Henderson
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas Southern University
The purpose of this study was to examine the predictability of emotional intelligence factors on the relationship quality among African American male college students. Specifically, this study was concerned with the predictable relationship between the emotional intelligence factors of emotion regulation, self-regulation, emotion management, and emotion in oneself and others and relationship quality components (romantic relationship, relationship satisfaction, relationship happiness, relationship adjustment, and relationship intimacy) among African American male college students. A predictive correlation research design was utilized in this empirical study. One hundred one (101) African American male college students were selected to participate in the study two instruments entitled: The Relationship Quality Survey and The Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale. There were five major null hypotheses tested in this study. Three of the five hypotheses were found to be significant. Analysis of results indicated that emotion regulation, self-regulation, emotion management, and emotion in oneself and others were found to be statistically related to romantic relationships among African American male college students. The variable emotion in oneself and others was found to be an independent predictor of romantic relationships. Additionally, emotional intelligence factors of emotion regulation, self-regulation, emotion management, and emotion in oneself and others were found to be statistically related to relationship adjustment among African American male college students. The variable emotion regulation was found to be an independent predictor of relationship adjustment. Finally, emotional intelligence factor of emotional regulation, self-regulation, emotion management, and emotion in oneself and others were found to be statistically related to relationship intimacy among African American male college students. The variable emotion regulation and emotion in oneself and others were found to be independent predictors of relationship intimacy.
