What Is the Impact of the COVID Pandemic on Enrollment and Retention in One Small Private College, and What Innovative Strategies Were Used to Address These Challenges

Enrollment and retention in higher education can be challenging under normal circumstances, but combined with a global pandemic, institutions will need to look at strategies to help navigate these uncertain times. This dissertation provided the needed research on the processes of decision-making related to enrollment, retention, institutional innovation and initiatives. A qualitative research method through a case study of one small private not-for-profit institution in Northeast Pennsylvania, was explored to evaluate: (1) the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on enrollment, retention, and innovation during a crisis; (2) sustainability and growth; (3) innovations that impact student enrollment and student retention initiatives; (4) goals of successful implementation and management of enrollment and retention during a crisis; and (5) the impact between the pandemic and innovation. Kotter's 1996 study of organizational change management theory guided this study. From the data analysis there were five main themes that emerged. First, collaboration was a key component for enrollment and retention initiatives, further providing strategic planning to enhance sustainable outcomes. Second, technological advancements in enrollment and retention platforms secured seamless transitions during a crisis. Third, financial support through funding opportunities to eliminate financial barriers supported enrollment and retention. Fourth, investing in enrollment and retention support systems was a critical element of maintaining enrollment and retention. Fifth, community partnerships and the creation of new programs and positions provided the needed support for enrollment and retention growth.
