Examining the Predictors of a Sense of Belongingness at a Predominantly White Institution

The purpose of this correlational, causal-comparative quantitative research was to examine the degree to which the level of perceived racism, housing status, and extracurricular involvement predicted a sense of belonging (SB), at a predominantly White institution (PWI). In universities, corporations, and organizations, cultivating a sense of belongingness has been known to boost morale, increase productivity, and produce successful students. The problem addressed in this study was a lack of a sense of belonging experienced by some minority college students on an evangelical Christian campus. This study utilized secondary data from an online survey completed by 388 traditional undergraduate students at a Christian evangelical university located in a metropolitan area in the Southeast region of the United States. The findings of this study yield statistically significant relationships between the three independent variables and the dependent variable. However, housing status and participation in extracurricular events did not moderate the relationship between the level of perceived racism and a sense of belongingness. Recommendations were to expand research to compare and contrast the experiences of graduate students, faculty, staff, and administrators and examine the impact of inclusive leadership and a sense of belongingness at various predominantly White institutions.
