Factors Leading to Attrition of Higher Education Students: A Quantitative Correlational Study

Not all students who enroll in college complete their degree. Students who drop out of college and fail to graduate represent a dilemma for higher education administrators. Determining factors that may lead to attrition has been a topic of discussion amongst educators. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there are any relationships between attrition and gender, attrition and age and attrition and cumulative completion rates. In addition, the intention was to identify the point in time at which students typically drop out of their degree program. Tinto's theory of integration and Astin's theory of student involvement served as the guiding framework for this research. Archival data for the 2019 calendar year were retrieved from a for-profit institution with five campus locations. The 2019 calendar year was selected to avoid retrieving data potentially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The results provided an overview of when students typically drop from their program of study after enrollment. Future recommendations include exploring connections among student program attendance rates, involvement in activities, and satisfaction with faculty member facilitation efforts. Future practices that can be explored include evaluating tools and academic resources made available to students within the first 6 months of their program. Other suggestions include considering the appropriateness of community resources and events for all, as well as monitoring student academic progression and creating an academic success plan.
