The purpose of the study was to provide information about the initial differences between students entering coed and single-sex university dormitories and to identify the different effects of these living arrangements on male and female students. In a sample of 122 African-American college students, internalized racial identity, academic classification, and parents' educational attainment were significantly related to hope. Internalized racial identity was related to vocational identity for women, but not for men. (SK)

From 1969 to 1984 the value women put on status-attainment goals has increased, but the value placed on domestic-nurturant goals has not decreased.
