Many changes in college enrollment patterns have occurred since 1982. Three variables that affect enrollment include: differential fertility among population groups, a state's ability to retain students to high school graduation, and the number of a state's high school graduates who leave the state for college. The unique program offered at Oakes College, at the University of California at Santa Cruz, attempts to capitalize on the ethnic and cultural differences of minority students while offering them remedial instruction and support services to enable them to compete with majority students within the California System. Nannerl Overhouser Keohane, one of a new breed of women presidents of women's colleges, is strongly committed to feminist scholarship and is also working to prepare Wellesley's graduates for the technology of the future. The role of minority students at Wellesley is discussed. (MLW)

Attempts to solve or alleviate the problems faced by minorities in newspaper journalism are offered by: the Berkeley Summer Program for Minority Journalists; the Consortium, a working arrangement between six Black colleges and large graduate institutions; and pressure encouraging the hiring of minorities by large news organizations. Survival of predeominantly Black colleges in the higher education system is advocated in arguments for an educational balance. Data on undergraduate, graduate, and professional school minority enrollment from 1976 to 1980, and from 1980 to 1984 were examined by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Minority access declines have been experienced by blacks, and Hispanics remain the least represented in higher education. (MLW)
