From a value study, three changes are relevant to educators: (1) high school graduates who have ended their formal education are the most disaffected of today's youth; (2) college students' interests are career planning and self-fulfillment; (3) a merger between campus values and careers is being pursued by college students. College costs, methods of payment, and how the pressure to make money may be shaping enrollment patterns are reviewed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. There is some evidence that students who take sizable loans may major in such fields as business, engineering, and allied health, which offer higher salaries. (MLW)
