South Carolina University student activity in the Special Olympics for mentally retarded youngsters and dozens of other community and fund-raising activities are described. In six months they generated $63,000 in contributions. Students are concluded to be national as well as community resources. (Author/MLW)

Campus Compact: The Project for Public and Community Service is described. It is a national, action-oriented effort to increase student community service by centralizing and increasing access to public service information, heightening awareness of public service, and reducing the disincentives now discouraging students from volunteer work. For the twenty-first century, higher education's future is promising, but in the meantime, there are problems--demographics, inflation, middle-class backlash--and two less discussed perils: loss of diversity and weakened commitment to science.
