Five Lessons for Campus Leaders: Academic Freedom, Shared Governance, and Tenure at an Historically Black University
Gasman, Marybeth
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v42 n6 p54-57 Nov 2010
On February 6, 2009, the president of Clark Atlanta University, an historically black institution in Atlanta, Georgia, terminated 55 full-time faculty members without notice. Many of these faculty members had tenure. These individuals, some of whom had worked at the university for over 15 years while making $45,000 a year as associate professors with tenure, were told to leave the institution immediately. As a result of President Carlton E. Brown's actions and at the request of Clark Atlanta University's current and fired faculty, the AAUP investigated the situation, eventually placing the Atlanta-based university on the organization's censure list. Since participating in the investigation last summer, the author has had time to reflect on the situation at Clark Atlanta University. She thinks there are some lessons to be learned from the institution's actions--lessons both for other HBCU leaders and for colleges and universities in general. In this article, the author discusses five lessons to be learned that might be helpful to other campus leaders. These include: (1) tell the truth; (2) respect tenure; (3) respect due process; (4) respect shared governance; and (5) foster a culture of debate and discussion. (Contains 6 resources.)
