Qualitative Evaluation of Value Creation for Participants in a Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Experience Program at a Research-Intensive Institution
Carpantato Myles
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of Alabama
In higher education today, there are various programs aimed at improving student retention and graduation success. These programs include both academic and non-academic initiatives aimed at increasing student engagement. One such high impact practice is undergraduate research. There has been an increase in the number of undergraduate research programs at colleges and universities, according to the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) (Council on Undergraduate Research, 2015). While research documents broadly the importance of this type of engagement for undergraduate students, to date, researchers have not sufficiently investigated the success of these programs at given institutions. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perspectives of stakeholders regarding a structured undergraduate research program using a case study methodology. For this qualitative study, stakeholder interviews were conducted to increase understanding of the program's significance and influence. The study included students who participated in the program, faculty mentors, and administrators of the program.
