In the field of higher education, many institutions utilize traditional leadership frameworks to achieve organizational goals, but research suggests that shared leadership strategies may have positive influences on organizational and student outcomes. Shared leadership has become a topic of increasing interest among scholars in recent years, and the purpose of this qualitative case study of was to explore the effects of shared leadership practices at a State College in Georgia (SCG). Specifically, the purpose of the study was to examine how shared leadership affects performance and relates to organizational decision-making by faculty and administrators at SCG. The population of the study included administrators and faculty at SCG, and a total of 10 participants working in a variety of administrative and teaching positions were interviewed. Data were analyzed using a process of thematic analysis that relied on codes developed from participants' interviews. The data analysis process resulted in the development of six themes. Based on the data, it was determined that (a) organizational flexibility supports shared leadership, (b) communication can be both a strength and a weakness, (c) collaboration and collectivity contribute to shared leadership, (d) feedback is important to the decision-making process, (e) a synergistic relationship exists between diversity and shared leadership, and (f) shared leadership directly influences the decision-making process. Together, these themes highlighted faculty and administrators' beliefs that shared leadership improved organizational outcomes at SCG. The findings from the present study can be used to support further research into the use of shared leadership within the field of higher education by highlighting areas where more information is needed.
