Kuhn, Deanna – Child Development, 1972
Study concerned with the mechanisms in terms of which the developmental transformation from one cognitive structure to another occurs. (Author)

Youniss, James; Dennison, Ann – Child Development, 1971
Study attempted to specify two complementary aspects of children's inferential size judgments within the context of Piaget's theory. (Authors)

Angiolillo-Bent, Joel S.; Rips, Lance J. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1982
Two strings of letters were presented. Subjects were instructed to indicate whether the second string contained the same elements as the first, regardless of position. Reaction time increased with the number of positions that the letters were displaced. Results indicate that order may be an important factor in retrieval from memory. (Author/BW)

Wetherick, N. E. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1975
Short-term memory for single-syllable words is negatively related to the number of semantic categories from which the words are drawn. Test results are inconsistent with any theory postulating a separate short-term memory that takes no account of semantic factors. (CHK)

Husak, William S.; And Others – 1980
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence that varying types of labels have on the organization of a series of movements in memory. Subjects were presented with a series of movements on a positioning task. They were provided with numeric labels for each movement held in the series. Results indicated that labels play an important…

Angelev, John; Kuhn, Deanna – Developmental Psychology, 1976
Looked for evidence of an intermediate stage between the second and third stages in multiple seriation during which subjects seriate the material on one dimension and classify it on the other. Fine grained analysis of stages is considered useful in elucidating the mechanisms of progression through a stage sequence. (GO)
Descriptors: Classification, Cognitive Processes, Developmental Stages, Elementary School Students
Derks, Peter L. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1972
The similarity match took longer than the identity match, and the difference in latency increased as the number of lines in the pattern increased. (Author)

McCann, C. Douglas – 1983
Cognitive psychologists believe that knowledge is multifaceted and that people process more than just semantic content from a stimulus array. To investigate the implications of recall and impression formation processing objectives on the representation of serial order in memory and judgment, subjects participated in two recall and impression…

Flora, June Annette – 1976
Kindergarten and first-grade children participated in a study of the role of reciprocal and inversion reversibility in language acquisition and cognitive development. Subjects completed cognitive tasks assessing conservation, seriation, and class inclusion, and language tasks assessing the active-passive transformation and the negative…

Treisman, Anne – Scientific American, 1986
Appraises current explanations of how visual processing occurs. Highlights the basics of simultaneous and serial levels of processing. Discusses the results of a series of experiments on visual-search tasks and also on the role of prior knowledge in processing. (ML)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Perception, Perception Tests, Science Education
Klatzky, Robert L.; Smith, Edward E. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1972
Results indicate that Ss expectancy for a given test stimulus probability, has its effect on the encoding or decision stage of the memory-scanning process. (Authors)
