Rips, Lance J.; And Others – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Verifying simple sentences generally involves a process wherein the meanings of individual words are combined to form the meaning of the entire sentence. Three experiments are described in which the combination process was investigated by asking subjects to decide whether S-V-Adj-O sentences were true or false. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Psycholinguistics
Corbett, Albert T.; Dosher, Barbara A. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Reading comprehension is an active inferential process. Three experiments are described in which the possibility was examined that highly probable inferences are drawn, even when they are unnecessary for comprehension. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Psycholinguistics

Schonbach, Peter – Cognition, 1977
In response to Roger Brown's memorial tribute to Eric Lenneberg, (Cognition, June, 1976), the author disagrees with Brown's conclusion that a Whorfian interpretation of both Lenneberg's and his own results regarding the problem of codability and the recognition of colors, is no longer valid. (Author/MV)
Descriptors: Codification, Cognitive Processes, Color, Language Research

Smith, Charlotte T. – Reading Teacher, 1978
Inferential questions were found to elicit longer responses than factual questions, reflecting complexity and the use of higher cognitive processes. (MKM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Communication Research, Critical Thinking
Gellatly, A. R. H.; Gregg, V. H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Meyer found subjects were faster to determine if a stimulus word was a member of either of two prespecified categories if the categories were close in meaning. A reanalysis of the data favors instead a model emphasizing the role of decision-making processes in categorization and flexibility of task strategies. (CHK)
Descriptors: Classification, Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research
Pergnier, Maurice – Etudes de Linguistique Appliquee, 1976
A study of linguistic theories as they apply to translation, which is understood as a translation of ideas, not of words. Topics covered are: lexical structure and polysemy; meaning; structure and polysemy; meaning and "related ideas"; structural linguistics; semantic fields and context. (Text is in French.) (AMH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Interference (Language), Language Research, Languages
Rundus, Dewey – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Predictions derived from an organizational interpretation of transfer in a part-whole free-recall paradigm were tested via a procedure which allowed manipulation of part- and whole-list organizational compatibility and extent of part-list organization. (Author/SW)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Learning Processes

Horgan, Dianne – Journal of Child Language, 1978
Spontaneous full passives and related constructions from 234 children, aged 2 to 13, and elicited passives from 262 college students were analyzed. The agentive non-reversible did not appear until after age 9; and until age 11 no child produced both reversible and non-reversible passives. (Author/SW)
Descriptors: Child Language, Cognitive Processes, Language Acquisition, Language Research

Leonard, Laurence B.; Schwartz, Richard G. – Journal of Child Language, 1978
Focus is one factor that may account for children's use of single-word utterances after they have acquired the use of multi-word utterances. The possible role that focus may play in children's use of single-word utterances in naturalistic settings, after the acquisition of syntax, was investigated. (SW)
Descriptors: Child Language, Cognitive Processes, Language Acquisition, Language Research
Bock, Kathryn – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
An investigation of the relationship between a speaker's decision to treat portions of the information in a sentence as given or new and the syntactic form of the sentence produced. A tendency of English speakers to use alternative surface structure rules to present given information before new information is demonstrated. (AMH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Research, Pragmatics, Psycholinguistics
Nelson, Thomas O. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Three new experiments concerning the depth-of-processing view demonstrate that repetition at the phonemic depth of processing does facilitate memory, regardless of whether the repetitions are massed or distributed and regardless of whether the dependent variable is uncued recall, cued recall or recognition. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Learning Processes

Olszewski, Paula; Fuson, Karen C. – Discourse Processes, 1986
Examined the conversations of preschool children as they completed two different tasks--a picture making task and a doll playing task. Concludes that the children's speech was primarily task-focused and that the rate of speech varied with task. (FL)
Descriptors: Child Language, Cognitive Processes, Imagination, Language Research

Rosch, Eleanor; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1976
Results show that basic objects are shown to be the most inclusive categories for which a concrete image of the category as a whole can be formed, to be the first categorizations made during perception of the environment and to be the categories most codable, most coded, and most necessary in language. (Author/DEP)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Classification, Cognitive Processes, Language Research
Gentner, Donald R. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Describes a study of the recall of narrative prose. Serial structure at first influenced which elements were remembered, but as the Ss remembered more, the story grammar structure became the dominant influence over the elements remembered. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Research, Learning Processes, Memory
Manelis, Leon – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
Three experiments investigated a characteristic of the propositions that underlie sentences. For some of the sentences tested, the same concepts occurred repeatedly across the underlying propositions; for others, concepts were seldom repeated. Repetitions were shown to facilitate sentence processing. (Author/RM)
