Schaeken, Walter; And Others – Cognition, 1996
A study conjectured that individuals make mental models of events when they reason from premises involving temporal relations. Several experiments using school children and university students as subjects found that problems that required one mental model elicited more correct responses than problems that required multiple mental models. (BC)

Sanford, Julie P. – 1985
This study examined the conduct of academic tasks in six secondary classrooms, focusing specifically on assigments requiring some higher level cognitive operations, with attention to how management strategies and classroom conditions associated with these assignments affect their cognitive demands on students. Analysis of tasks in these six…

Abkarian, G. G. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1987
Evaluation of classification skills of 88 unimpaired children (grades K, 2, 4, and 6) were evaluated using the Iconic-Symbolic test (IS) of the Muma Assessment Program and follow-up interviews. Results found little relationship between the rationales the children reported using and the classification criteria presumed by the IS procedure. (DB)

An intelligence model of processes and content of thought is proposed. Processes include remembering, evaluating, generating, and transforming, while content is self, forms, ideas, and persons, determining levels of complexity for learning. The TETRA model is compared with J.P. Guilford's aptitude structure of intellect. Theory implications for…

Cave, Kyle R.; And Others – Cognitive Psychology, 1994
Three experiments involving 107 adults who performed mental rotation tasks explored how location information is incorporated into image representation. Results suggest that image is coded retinotopically in image representations and that there is no spatiotropic transform in the early stages of visual processing. (SLD)

ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading and Communication Skills, Urbana, IL. – 1982
Schemata, as defined recently by reading researchers, represent generic concepts which are stored in memory. They include underlying objects, situations, events, actions, and sequences of actions for use in interpreting new experiences. Research on schemata suggests that teachers need to pay attention to the types of questions they ask when…

Murnion, William E. – 1987
Advocates and teachers of critical thinking tend to deny that intuition and justification are logical, even though they assume that both processes are rational. However, it can be demonstrated that the relation between intuition and inference, between justification and explanation, is dialectical and complementary, so that there is no mystery as…
