A reply to K. Kilburn, "The Need for Classics" in this issue. Points out that Kilburn is imprecise in notions of categories of thought and his notion of tradition. The assumption that initiation into a category of thought requires a return to sources is challenged. (CHK)

Controversies surrounding the teaching of Latin in American schools have had at their core the question of ornament versus utility. The course of this debate is outlined, with emphasis on a few personalities who made significant contributions. (RM)

A discussion of some of the difficulties and procedures in translating classical quotations occurring in a modern text. Some of the topics covered are: use of published translations, transliteration from ancient Greek, and non-classical idioms such as medieval and botanical Latin. (AMH)

The contributions to classics teaching of James Barclay of Dalkeith, an eighteenth century Scottish educator, are presented. In addition, a general attempt is made to show him within the general development of classics teaching in Scotland at that time. (SW)
