Identity in Christ: Transformation from ACEs-Related Identity Wounds to Wholeness

Leading people often involves guiding individuals through some type of season of healing. It may be physical healing, or it may be emotional or spiritual. This study uses a mixed methods approach to explore a Christ-centered healing method for Christians struggling with identity wounds. In this context, identity wounds denote a sense of internal brokenness or any negative identity belief an individual may hold. These include but are not limited to feelings of being inherently damaged, unworthy, unlovable, "bad," or deserving of misfortune. The study used multiple surveys to gather data on self-concept, identity, ACE history, participants' relationship with God, and their perceptions of this relationship. Quantitative tools included the SCIM, ACE Questions, and CGS, while the qualitative phase used a semi-structured God Perception Interview protocol adapted to various life settings beyond sermon contexts. The quantitative analysis found no significant correlation between ACEs and self-concept or identity. However, quantitative and qualitative findings show that forming a relationship with Jesus Christ is strongly tied to identity healing.
