The Self-Initiated Creativity of Children during COVID-19

One afternoon during the early days of the COVID-19 lockdown, as I was retooling my in-person courses for online instruction, I took a break to see how the educators and artists I follow on Instagram were faring. As I scrolled through a variety of posts, I happened upon an image showing a page torn from the 1940 children's book "Lentil" by Robert McCloskey (Figure 1). The page was yellowed with age; its edges curled, and around the perimeter was an artfully arranged selection of pinecones and other detritus. According to the accompanying text, the items were collected on a walk by a mother and her young son. Upon their return home, the child carefully placed the objects around the page as a sort of surrogate picture frame. The resulting image was sweet and poignant; items that had been discarded by people or dropped by nature were salvaged by a child who then brought them together to form a contemplative and charming work of art. This image also was reflective of what anthropologist and scholar Ellen Dissanayake referred to as "making special" (Brown & Dissanayake, 2009, p. 46).
