Farrer, Nicola J.; Monk, Nicholas; Heron, Jonathan; Lough, Julie Ann; Sadler, Peter J. – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2010
In order to explore new teaching and learning methods for undergraduates in chemistry at the University of Warwick, interactive workshops based on the periodic table were devised by a team of chemists and theatre practitioners. In the first term of the academic year, students were assigned an element to research, and were required to submit…

Anderson, Wayne P. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1998
Discusses predicting common oxidation numbers, uncommon oxidation numbers, hydrogen-phosphorus bonds and other examples. (PVD)
Descriptors: Chemical Bonding, Chemistry, Higher Education, Inorganic Chemistry

Chung, Chung-Sun – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
The entropy change for a reaction in aqueous solution can be evaluated as a combination of entropy factors. Valuable insight or understanding can be obtained from a detailed examination of these factors. Several entropy effects of inorganic chemical reactions are discussed as examples. (Author/JN)

Barbe, Jacques – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Bond character is directly conditioned by the peculiar capacity of bonded atoms to exchange electrons; such a capacity is clearly illustrated by electronegativity. The determination of bond character using the electronegativity difference between the bonded atoms is discussed and an equation focusing on relationships between bonds is provided. (JN)

Vicente, J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Most inorganic chemistry textbooks present the determination of spectroscopic terms obtained from a given electronic configuration by a method which requires explicitly writing down all microstates. A method is provided and discussed in which tabulating all possible microstates is not required. (JN)

Szczepankiewicz, Steven H.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1995
Presents the view that the explanation of the Golden Penny Experiment found in popular chemistry textbooks is insufficient or incorrect in part. Reports a series of electrochemical measurements that lead to a logical explanation for this demonstration and to a simplified design that makes it safer. (DDR)

Tanaka, John; Suib, Steven L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Discusses the properties of surface-conducting glass and the chemical nature of surface-conducting stannic (tin) oxide. Also provides the procedures necessary for the preparation of surface-conducting stannic oxide films on glass substrates. The experiment is suitable for the advanced inorganic chemistry laboratory. (JN)

Baird, Donald M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Biomimetic chemistry is concerned with the synthesis of small, molecular weight molecules which mimic the properties of metal-containing sites within certain biologically significant species. A series of experiments for an advanced undergraduate laboratory is described as a way to introduce this area into the chemistry curriculum. (JN)

Gilbert, George L., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1988
Describes two demonstrations for use in college chemistry classes. Includes "Spectroscopy in Large Lecture Halls" and "The Endothermic Dissolution of Ammonium Nitrate." Gives materials lists and procedures as well as a discussion of the results. (CW)

Hill, William D. Jr. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1986
Describes a procedure for oxygen generation by thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate in presence of manganese dioxide, reacted with various sulfides. Provides a table of sample product yields for various sulfides. (JM)

Webb, Michael J.; Canham, Geoffrey W. Rayner – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Describes the descriptive inorganic chemistry component of a second year course in intermediate general chemistry at Sir Wilfred Grenfall College (Canada). Includes course content, listing of audiovisual aids, and discussion of textbooks used. (Author/JN)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Course Content, Course Descriptions

Bailar, John C., Jr. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1989
Describes the development of the Division of Inorganic Chemistry, from the founding of the American Chemical Society in 1876, the formation of the Division in 1957, and recent events. Includes tables listing officers of the Division and symposia titles at national meetings. (YP)

Barnum, Dennis – Journal of Chemical Education, 1999
Presents a simple qualitative system for sketching all manner of acid-base titration curves, requiring only the approximate values of the acid or base ionization constants. (WRM)
