It is difficult to define mid-life career change because it varies from person to person. A wide variety of sociological, economic, technological, and psychological factors impinging on the conscious and unconscious being of individuals affects how they deal with this particular stage of life. These factors include individual needs, family and children, physiological changes, advanced technology, needs of special populations, personality traits, and self-concept. Individuals considering mid-life career/work must be able to assess their current job skills and applicability of them to new careers, explore alternatives within their current job position as well as external counseling services, and examine personal values. Career transition then becomes the response to seeking compatability between self-image and the world of work. (Author/HLM)
