The Art of Mentoring
Reese, Susan
Techniques: Connecting Education and Careers, v81 n6 p14-19 Sep 2006
Mentoring provides students with role models, inspiration and encouragement that helps paint the promise of a successful future. In this article, the author discusses examples of successful mentoring programs in career and technical education. Among them is the High Tech Girls Society (HTGS). The program was started in the 2003-2004 school year in order to increase the representation and success of women in nontraditional career fields. It provides girls with the opportunity to participate in activities with business and postsecondary partners that support nontraditional careers for women. It also provides girls the opportunity to perform community service and links them with SkillsUSA. She talks about the success of Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program, as well as the partnership between the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System and Foy H. Moody High School, which were recognized by ACTE.
