The Spiritual Resilience & Post-Secondary Academic Achievement of Christian School Alumni
David Pahman
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lipscomb University
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the spiritual resilience and post-secondary academic success of graduates from a Protestant Christian school serving preschool through secondary. In this case study, the researcher strove to measure the five most recent graduating classes' spiritual resiliency, perceptions of the impact of the school's mission in their daily lives, and post-secondary academic outcomes. The research measured the differences in the spiritual beliefs and practices of the graduates and a national sample, the differences in the spiritual resilience and perceptions of organizational influences between the classes, and the differences in spiritual resilience and organizational influences on the post-secondary academic outcomes of the classes. The researcher collected data through the Alumni Spiritual and Academic Outcome Survey and graduate interviews. Findings showed that most graduates indicated that their fundamental beliefs were still consistent with the faith belief questions and "somewhat agreed" with the faith practices questions on the survey. The graduates "somewhat agreed" that the school's mission influenced their daily lives. In the interviews, graduates strongly expressed the perception that the school accomplished its mission with them. The data revealed themes aligned to the five practices of resilient faith, resentment of the school's religious affiliation, and continuity of Christian education. The post-secondary academic outcomes were strong. The spiritual beliefs and practices of graduates were significantly higher than a national sample. The data showed that the classes' spiritual resilience and organizational influences were consistent with each other.
