Gurney, Peter W. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1987
This study examined the effect of increasing the frequency of positive self-referent verbal statements upon both overt and reported self-esteem in children with adjustment problems. Subjects were boys in special schools. Results showed a significant difference in overt self-esteem, but not in other dependent variables. (LMO)

Pace, Denise M.; Forman, Susan G. – Psychology in the Schools, 1982
Exposed students in four second-grade classes exhibiting disruptive behavior to response cost programs with varying initial reinforcement and fine levels. Results indicated all treatments were highly effective, as all groups underwent maximum behavioral change. Suggests degree of aversiveness of procedure did not appear to be strongly related to…

Singh, N. N.; Pulman, Ruth M. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1979
Psychological treatment techniques for the control of self-injury in a 13-year-old male with de Lange syndrome (a rare disorder characterized by retarded mental and physical development) are presented. Techniques, which included mild punishment, time out, and differential reinforcement, produced a clinically significant control of self-injurious…

Van Houten, Ron; Nau, Paul A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1980
The performance of five students (ages 6 to 10) in an adjustment class for deaf children was compared under fixed and variable ratio schedules of reinforcement. During the VR condition, students visually attended more and engaged in disruptive behavior less often than during the FR condition. (Author)

Snyder, James; Schrepferman, Lynn; St. Peter, Carolyn – Behavior Modification, 1997
Explores how theories concerning socialization mechanisms may be operationalized and tested. Provides a preliminary test of this strategy using 57 boys being treated for conduct problems. Results indicate that the role of both negative reinforcement and affect dysregulation play a part in the development of a child's antisocial behavior. (RJM)

Horner, Robert H.; Carr, Edward G.; Strain, Phillip S.; Todd, Anne W.; Reed, Holly K. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2002
A review of 41 studies on behavioral interventions for children with autism (ages 0-8) found aggression, tantrums, self-injury, and stereotypy were behaviors most targeted. Results also indicate interventions should be developed based on a thorough analysis of biological, antecedent, and consequence events that control them. Behavioral support…

Baer, Donald M. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1992
This commentary on a paper (EC 603 646) describing a natural reinforcement project of Communidad Los Horcones (Mexico) notes that the original paper lacks auxiliary procedures for students whose behaviors are not controlled by described procedures, offers no guidance on curriculum structure, and fails to recognize potential opposition to such…

Huguenin, Nancy H. – Mental Retardation, 1993
Behavioral techniques (positive reinforcement and nonexclusionary timeout) effectively decreased problem behaviors of noncompliance and aggression of a young adult male with severe mental retardation and Down's syndrome residing in the community. (DB)

Shirley, Melissa J.; Iwata, Brian A.; Kahng, Sung Woo – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1999
Results of a functional analysis indicted that the hand mouthing of a woman with profound mental retardation was maintained by multiple sources of control (sensory stimulation and access to a leisure item). Hand mouthing, though maintained by automatic reinforcement, was also susceptible to social contingencies when exposed to them during…

Sigafoos, Jeff; And Others – Education and Treatment of Children, 1996
A naturalistic assessment of self-injurious behavior in an 11-year-old boy with multiple disabilities, including severe mental retardation, found that the boy's self-injury was occasioned by low attention and low stimulation and maintained by tangible and social reinforcement. Naturalistic assessment effectively guided the selection of behavioral…

Barry, Leasha M.; Haraway, Dana L. – Journal of Early and Intensive Behavior Intervention, 2005
In this paper, self-control strategies are conceptualized as existing on two intersecting continuums of more or less individual control and increasing complexity depending on individual need. Behavioral self-control strategies for young children require external supports to assist children in learning the skills necessary to practice and implement…

Feinstein, Sheryl – Journal of Correctional Education, 2003

Vanderbilt, Allison A. – Beyond Behavior, 2005
Self-monitoring is used to increase on-task behavior of students by encouraging them to monitor their own behavior (Hallahan, Lloyd, & Stoller, 1982). According to Daly and Ranalli (2003), there are many benefits of self-monitoring: (1) It is an effective tool for changing behavior; (2) It promotes generalization of the appropriate behavior to…

Boyd, Brian A.; Alter, Peter J.; Conroy, Maureen A. – Beyond Behavior, 2005
