Pamela O. Puryear; Rachel H. Addison-Miller
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Morehead State University
The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine how certification status impacts turnover intention, to research provided assistance, and to meet professional learning needs in novice teachers in eastern Kentucky. Understanding differences in needs of teachers, based upon certification type, is critical in reducing the rate of attrition among novice teachers. This research focuses primarily to determine the certification type, provided assistance, professional learning needs, and turnover intention rates for novice teachers in eastern Kentucky. It was our belief, as researchers, that there would be a significant difference in the needs of traditionally-certified, occupation-based certified, and alternatively-certified teachers. A survey was utilized to collect responses from 44 novice teachers across eastern Kentucky. As Kentucky school administrators look for ways to decrease novice teacher attrition, they will find useful results of this study, which provides information about the needs of these novice teachers and the impact that certification status can have on their individual needs.
